HADRIEL: Newt's Bestiary

[note: newt is a xenobiologist who has six phds and five years of alien/monster-studying experience. i'm not! and i don't want to make a bunch of headcanon decisions about the monsters of hadriel! so oocly i'm just gonna list the monsters newt has studied and include whatever findings i can back up with the bestiary or the wiki pages, but icly his notes would be more involved. feel free to assume he's discovered other stuff about the monsters if you want your character to have that knowledge!

if the monsters have an entry in the official hadriel bestiary, i'll link that. if not, i'll link the intro log it's from. aaand there will be ic and ooc monster names where applicable, since newt wouldn't icly know the names for some things. i'm letting him just correctly guess the obvious ones to minimize confusion.

i'll be updating the bestiary about once a month around intro log day, but it takes time for newt to finish his research. so updating the bestiary in february means that i'll be adding the monsters from january, and february's monsters will debut in the march update, etc.

also newt's an asshole and won't give them credit, but his lab/monster ranch helpers are michael munroe, george lass, cashmere, semiyon, and hayden. he's also had a lot of help cataloguing the tundra wildlife from nick valentine, tinya, glacius, and pratt.]

Hey Hadriel. Here's a little guide on the monsters that have come through the city since I've been here, mostly through the Door but I've added a section for monsters native to the planets we end up on.

I'm doing my research down at the lab. If you want to bring me monsters or help with stuff that's where I'll be.

Note that a lot of the monsters arent actually in town anymore. Still gonna include the ones I had a chance to study in case we ever see stuff like em again.

* Monsters with an asterisk are "extinct" as far as we're concerned.

The list is in roughly chronological order, starting with the monsters that were here when I got here and ending with the most recent breach.

DOOR MONSTERS

JABBERJAY
[ooc: and cashmere told them they weren't called mimic birds within like two seconds, everyone give it up for cashmere!]
- Black songbirds (Might be corvids? I've never gotten a good look at them.) with a white or blue crest.
- Rare, but they do live within the city.
- Can perfectly mimic human voices. They seem to repeat what they hear as opposed to using the language intelligently. This is a result of genetic engineering; they were created as weapons for a tyrannical government. They can remember and repeat entire conversations.
- Probably as edible as any other bird.
- All male. Known to breed with female songbirds to create hybrid species (though that can't happen in Hadriel given that reproduction has been mysteriously halted).
- These are from Cashmere's home world.

WENDIGO/WENDIGO SPIRIT*?
- I've only heard rumors about these guys and I don't know if they're still in town? I know next to nothing about them, so keep me in the loop if you spot one.
- Apparently, once upon a time, the gods contaminated the meat in Hadriel with human flesh, and wendigo spirits happened because of that, or something? I can't stress how much I'm working with rumors for this one.

EVIL TREE*
- These came in through the Door with me, so before I'd planned on studying Hadriel's monsters. As such, I don't know much about them. This is all from memory.
- Trees, but somehow capable of movement. Primarily grabbed with branches, but also capable of moving along the ground by uprooting themselves.

VELOCIRAPTOR*
- Bipedal carnivorous dinosaurs. Velociraptor technically but the brand I'm used to back home are smaller. These ones stand about 6 ft. and are scaly, lacking feathers. They're closer to deinonychus than velociraptor.
- Pack hunters. Incredibly dangerous. They don't possess any magical abilities like some of the creatures that have come through the Door, but they're very smart and virtually silent when they want to be. Apex predators.
- Primary dangers include sharp 3 inch talons, sharp teeth in a strong jaw, and speed/strength. They can outrun a human easily.

SALAMANDER*
- Amphibious, looks like a small lizard. On average about 8 inches long. Extremely hot to the touch and will ignite most things it comes into contact with. Handle with care.
- Friendly. Likes fish.
- I have two that I've been studying. I think a few others in town might still have some, too. Wild population appears to be extinct.

EARTH ELEMENTAL*
- Humanoid rock creatures that stand roughly 7-10 ft. tall.
- Slow-moving, but very strong and difficult to defend against or injure.
- As far as I can tell, these guys are just rocks? I don't know how they're able to move around.

NURSE*
- Humanoid monsters that look like nurses. Their clothing is actually skin, and their faces are usually covered in the same skin wrap.
- Attracted to light and sound. They'll stand perfectly still until something grabs their attention, and then their movements are jerky and spastic. Difficult to kill.
- Most carry some sort of short blade, scalpel, or sawlike instrument. Will attack if approached.
- A lot of variants on this creature came in through the Door, but I didn't have a chance to study them all in-depth. I'm generalizing. Anyway, they're not in town anymore. Thankfully. These are my least favorite monsters by FAR.

MIMIC*
- Black, four-limbed spider-like creatures that can transform into inanimate objects to surprise their prey. Standing up, they're about the size of a person, but most of their mass is made up of limbs. Their skin is gelatinous and elastic.
- Their hunting strategy is designed to ambush humans, as they typically assume the form of household objects like chairs or trash can. They're capable of learning from their environment and will mimic items that look to belong in the area.
- The attack by ambush. They kill their pray by smothering or forcibly inserting their limbs into airways to restrict breathing.
- Visually, their mimicry is incredibly convincing, but they emit a soft clicking sound while they're transformed.
- As far as I know, mimics have been wiped out of the city completely except for mine. I'm keeping a juvenile for observation.

DEATH WORM*
- Large (approx. 2-5 feet long) subterranean worms capable of spitting poison and generating electrical shocks.
- The poison they spit is also secreted through their skin. Handle with extreme caution. Also: not edible!
- Carnivorous; will eat you if given the chance.
- They appear to hibernate. It's tough to tell since they live underground, though.
- I had three of these, but I think they either died or escaped and were swept out of the city when Hope did his thing. Maybe not, though? If you see them, let me know.

FLYING MONKEY*
- Chimpanzees with strong, hawk-like wings that allow them to fly.
- They're just as comfortable on the ground as they are in the air.
- Strong enough to lift an average-sized person into the air.
- Their behavior and anatomy is so far in line with what you'd expect from chimps that can also fly. They're intelligent, social creatures that may be capable of understanding human language. To what degree, I'm not sure. Haven't studied them up close and personal, at least not while they're alive (and I'd prefer to keep it that way; these guys are mean).
- Hostile and will attack with claws and weapons (daggers and spears they came in with or found, though I imagine they could put together crude weaponry if they put their minds to it) if approached.

ROCK CRAB*
[ooc: both rock and lava crabs.]
- Large crabs that can disguise themselves as rocks.
- Outer shell is incredibly tough and difficult to break into from the outside. Undersides are vulnerable.
- Camouflage is top notch; discerning them from actual rocks is difficult.
- Relatively fast considering their rocky exterior. Will attack with claws if provoked.
- Probably edible if you can get under there? Haven't tried; if you do, let me know. According to sources, they're edible, but this source will put like almost literally anything into his mouth so take this information with a grain of salt.

KABUTOPS*
- Bipedal horseshoe crab-like creature, covered in a carapace (usually brown and skeletal) with long scythe-like arms.
- Average height = 4 ft.
- Strong swimmers
- While capable of speech, the only word they appear to be able to say is "kabutops" (hence the name). Despite their language limitations, they do appear intelligent and capable of understanding verbal communication.
- A small pack remains in Hadriel on the eastern island (with the coliseum), though it's possible that they could spread to other islands given their swimming ability. They're intelligent hunters and will attack if approached.
- Apparently called "pokemon" as well, but given that "pokemon" encompasses a range of creatures, these ones are getting dubbed kabutops.
- Edible, but barely.

RUST MONSTER*
- Flea-like creatures that can corrode any metal they come into contact with. They're roughly human-sized.
- Can also corrode metal from a short distance; I'm still researching this ability, but the range appears to be about 5 feet.
- Null bodies are susceptible to this corrosion as well (HIGHLY ANNOYING!)
- Before you ask, no, I have not found a way to weaponize the corrosive properties. In fact, I have yet to determine how they're able to do this in the first place. Given that they're capable of corroding from a short distance, I suspect the cause might be magical in nature as opposed to physiological.
- When agitated, they will attempt to bite.

OGRE*
- Massive (roughly 10-15 ft. tall) humanoid monsters with tall, branching horns protruding from the top of the skull. Typically clad in crude armor that doesn't do much to protect them.
- Their anatomy roughly lines up with that of a human except that their skulls are split into a heart shape due to the horns, and their overall physique is much thicker and more muscular. They also have fangs, though those tend to be used as a secondary weapon as opposed to their primary means of attack.
- Very strong. Some wield crude weapons.
- They don't tire easily, and they seem to have some sort of regenerative property that allows them to heal very rapidly. The only want to take one down permanently is to do a *lot* of damage in a short amount of time.
- Violent and brutal. They'll attack with little to no provocation.

ECHO FLOWER
- Tall (roughly 3-4 ft.) blue flowers capable of repeating the last sounds they were exposed to.
- ENTIRELY HARMLESS!
- Bioluminescent. Their natural environment is underground and they flourish in darkness rather than sunlight.
- Each flower has a single stem with one blossom, made up of one large corolla with six petals. The entire flower glows, though the petals are the most vibrant.
- They seem to primarily repeat speech, though they can also repeat simple melodies. Eventually they'll forget sounds and will instead emit white noise (the time it take for them to forget sounds has thus far varied wildly).
- I have six that I'm keeping for observation and experimentation.
- These are from Alphys's home world.

HYBRID MONSTER*
- The monsters that came through the Door after Sorrow's experimentation with the fragments while still on the island planet. There was no real consistency among them other than they were all spliced together haphazardly.
- Examples include: a winged shark and a snake with the head of an ibis (who is still alive and is also an escape artist, if anyone was wondering).

GIANT SCORPION
- What it says on the tin. Scorpions, but really big.
- Boooooring.
- Not sure about the properties of their venom. They're big enough that getting stung would inject you with a LOT of venom though, so even if we're not sure on the toxicity, I'd avoid getting stung. That said, if you do get stung, let me know what that was like (probably when Hope revives you).

WYVERN
[ooc: Rathalos]
- Huge firebreathing dragons (wyverns technically; they're bipedal) with wings and a strong, spiked tail.
- Primarily attacks from the sky with fire attacks, but is known to bite and sweep with its tail too.
- Too big for me to study down at the lab, so if anyone has viable parts for me to examine, lay em on me.

TUNDRA PLANET MONSTERS

MAMMOTH
- Large (~8 ft. long) round mammals covered in thick fur; I use the term "mammoth" loosely. Here are some pictures. They have many rows of sharp teeth (think shark, if any of you are familiar).
- Signature move is the ability to withdraw their limbs into their coats (likely as both a defense mechanism and to confuse their prey/attacker). Despite their size, they can then shoot their heads out with remarkable speed to bite at their target.
- Likely exclusively carnivorous given the condition of their teeth.
- Herd animals, typically traveling in groups 6-8 strong.
- Have been spotted circling the city to investigate. Sources say they're unlikely to attack us outright or venture into city limits, but we can't rule out this possibility. They're aggressive when approached.

GERBIL
- Probably not actual gerbils or mice as we know them but close enough. Small (body is a few inches long) longhaired rodents with very long, tufted tails.
- Easy to catch. Probably edible but like any small rodent they're not going to provide much meat.
- They've been observed using their tails as bait for insects, which seem to be their primary diet.
- They also like spam.

BAT
- Disclaimer: I don't know much about these as I haven't managed to come across any specimens yet, dead or alive. These notes are purely based on observation.
- Pretty much your average bat in appearance except they have four wings, similar in structure to a moth or a butterfly.
- Nest on large rocks, presumably to stay away from predators. I'd love to get a look at a nest if anyone finds one.

NAUTILUS (HADRIEL'S FORMER HOSTS?)
- (ooc oh my god there's a lot of info here this section is gonna have to wait a min)

Shortly after the move to the Tundra, Newt gets couple of pictures forwarded to his inbox from Nick, along with a note.

We've got a girl on the Guard who can get close to the local wildlife without putting herself in too much danger, so I thought we might save you some trouble.

... Which is likely his polite way of saying Newt, do not get yourself killed out there for science.
