week 1 - hiro - friday post-investigation

[Hiro has been at the top of Newt's post-investigation check-in list since he disappeared after the whole "head on a spike" thing. Newt's glad his buddy vanished because that means he probably didn't spend much time examining a mutilated corpse, so that's cool, but... now Newt can't find him. He's checked the huts, the beach, even the jungle paths, and no dice. Where is he?

So, it's later in the day when Newt shows up at the cavern. In retrospect, he should've come here earlier. It's Newt's favorite spot on the island, and it's a bit out of the way from the general chaos of the hut area.

He peeks into the mouth of the cave.]

Hey, Hiro? You in here, dude?

It's going to happen regardless. [As doom and gloom as that sounds, he thinks that if they accept it it's easier to focus on finding an answer.] We have to be careful with who we can trust. Given that we didn't think anybody would give into the game and here we are.

[Newt. Newt no.] There was still a thumb in the water...and that's still pretty gross no matter how you look at it.

[You continue to be a smart cookie, Hiro. The faster they accept the game as fact, the more energy they'll have to work on fixing it.]

True... [That's a crappier thought, really. That one of them did this and is lying about it.] Most of the people I've talked to seem... I don't know. I guess "trustworthy" is more than I can say given that we've all only known each other for, like, a week. I haven't talked to everyone, though.

[Newt y... actually no for right now but just for now.] Hm. There's gotta be something in there worth getting at, though. [But he won't push it for now. He'd need a flashlight or something to really get a good look at the place, anyway.]

I haven't either, but I'm going to eventually. It's the only thing that makes sense now. Get as much data as possible, go from there.

[Good Newt, best Newt.] You think so? I think it might just be a pool, dude.

Yeah... That's a good call. Gathering data.

[sorry hiro he's distracted by this """pool""" business.]

I do think so. It looks like it might go past the end of the cave. Might lead to, like, more cave. It's too dark, though. We'd need a flashlight or something.

[zerotohiro]

[He tilts his head curiously.]

An exploration mission then. You think the Chiefs would actually give us something useful like a flashlight to explore the area? They don't seem too happy about helping us.

I like the sound of that. Going with a group is the safest option, for sure. And, hm, doesn't hurt to ask. If they won't give us a flashlight, maybe we can scrounge together some materials for other kinds of light sources.

[zerotohiro]

Who would you even take? If we don't have flashlights maybe a torch or something? We could probably light a stick on fire if we tried hard enough. [They definitely know what they're doing.]

[completelycrazy]

Well, you, obviously. If you're up for it. Raven'd be useful, too. And maybe Lief.

[Everything about this plan is 100% safe.]

We should be able to find stuff for a torch or two here. The biggest hurdle is gonna be the fuel. I doubt the Chiefs will just give us kerosene. [HAHAHA.] But we could probably talk them into giving us cooking oil or something. That'd seem innocuous enough.

[zerotohiro]

It doesn't sound like a bad idea. [It sounds like a terrible idea, but #science.]

Cooking oil for a store we don't have. If one person asked for that and another person asked for matches we could probably rig something together. It can't hurt to ask. Until then, we should probably focus on other stuff. With Haru gone...you know what comes next.

[completelycrazy]

[Newt nods. Hiro's right; they shouldn't get too swept up in this stuff, not right now.]

Okay. I'll see if I can get my hands on a flashlight, and once we figure out what we've got to work with, we can revisit. Until then, uh, yeah... We should focus on the trial.

[At this point, it's probably getting late? idk time is a construct.] You want to head back?

[zerotohiro]

Probably not a bad idea. C'mon. [Let's walk away from the weird ominous pool and weirder, more ominous cavern for now.] Maybe if we do well they'll even give us two flashlights.
