week 3 - katara - saturday post-trial
[Katara will find Newt sitting on the beach, leaned back with his hands in the sand so he can look up at the stars. Eventually, he'll head back and make the rounds, say goodbye to people, pass on his final theories, or... whatever. For now, he doesn't really care about any of that. The silence is nice. The breeze sweeping in over the ocean is nice.
It'd be a hell of a lot nicer if he could do this again tomorrow night, but, well. He'll take what he can get.]

[ there are a couple of people here with that mindset, and while katara can understand their frustration...
she's never been one to stop trying. ]
So you do your best, and we'll do ours, too.

Back home, the planet's been under siege by those aliens, right? They started attacking a little over ten years ago, and humanity's been on the brink of extinction ever since. [That's maybe overselling it, but eventually that's where this was headed, and he's got a point here.]
When things are that bleak for that long, it messes with your head. A lot of people gave up, or worse, tried to ignore what was going on. Hell, even the people in charge of the resistance efforts were pessimistic about our odds. I was an outlier. I got a lot of crap for respecting the Kaiju like I do, but in the end, that respect is what saved us.
[He shrugs. It's been, what, three weeks? But home feels very far away right now. His voice is flat in comparison to the other times he's excitedly babbled about Kaiju. It's hard to feel like anything he did mattered when he just got carted off to this hell hole immediately after.]
What I'm getting at is that, yeah, people are going to give up. It's just how this kind of thing goes. It's stupid and incredibly pointless, but it happens. Even if some people say screw it and give up, don't let that stop you. Even if you're the last person left alive that still gives a shit. That's still worth something. The more of you there are, the easier this will be, but as long as you're still fighting, that's all you really need.

So... yeah. I won't give up, not until we've won and everyone gets to go back.
