week 6 - mary - saturday post-trial

[Newt tracks down Mary as soon as he can after the trial. They, uh, sure have some things to talk about, huh!

He finds her at the kotatsu in the greenhouse. This isn't all the private, but... Whatever? It probably doesn't matter at this point. Everyone's just kind of milling around, anyway.]

Hey. [He sits down next to her and gestures at her back.] I like your wings.

Whoa. [His eyebrows shoot up.]

A Composer, huh? [He's so mystified as to how all this stuff works.] That's awesome. [IS IT?] I'm glad you're gonna get to stay with Max. You two running Games together is gonna be a trip.

[He's a little sad he won't be around to see it.]

We're gonna run the most fun Games ever! It's going to be so much better than the way things used to be!

[It makes her smile just to think about it, and she starts wiggling around a little bit.]

I would have missed Max so much...I'm really happy that he asked me. I was hoping we could be friends forever.

[she pauses.]

So what are you going to do? You said you have to save the world...but you wanted me to visit, so are you going to become a reaper?

Hah, yeah, I bet it will be. [Assuming the Games get to continue, that is... He hopes they did enough.

He's quiet for a moment at her question, though. He hadn't considered that.]

Um, I don't really know, I guess. Can you still visit me if I'm not a Reaper? [...] What does being a Reaper even entail? I'm a little murky on the job requirements.

[newt no?]

I don't really know...your world is really scary, isn't it? What if I get eaten by a cute monster?

[She's already dead, so, she'd be fine, but...it doesn't sound fun!]

Ummm...it's different everywhere you go, I think. I'm not an expert because I've only been in one game as a Reaper before...and I don't think I did what I was supposed to. [She pouts.] It depends on what kind of Reaper you are, too. But mostly you just do what your conductor tells you to do.

[He chuckles.]

Don't worry, you won't. If Hermann and I get to go home, we know how to stop the monsters. We'll be able to get rid of them for good.

[unless SOMEONE decides to be an ASSHOLE, but that's like ten years down the road and isn't happening in this au because of the power of gay.]

Hm. I, uh, I'm pretty bad at following orders, I gotta say. [He's self aware, at least?] What did you do in the other Game?

Haha...well...I wasn't feeling so good after what happened in the Game that I was a Player in, so...I was a bit naughty...

[Ominous. We've all seen evidence of Mary on a Bad Day and what she accomplishes.]

But if you're just a support Reaper, you don't have to help weed out the Players, you just get to help them along and stuff!

[Ominous indeed... Newt will, uh, not press further.]

Hm. Yeah, I guess that would be kind of cool... [Is he seriously considering this? What the hell?]

But, um, I couldn't ditch Hermann like that. Not after all this.

Ask him to do it, too! Then we'll all be together and happy forever and ever and ever!

[She's very optimistic.]

Pleeeeaaaase? Pretty please?

Wait, you really want me to? Or, um, us? How does it even... I don't know anything about the Games in my world, though.

I don't, either! But it won't take long before I'm a Composer, so I'd ask for them to transfer you right away, and then you can be where I am!

[Fuck Pacrim, is what she's saying.]

Oh. [It finally clicks that she's asking him to come work for her. Oh...]

I, um. [He licks his lips. This should not be as tempting as it is.] If I did that, would I still be able to go back to my world when we're not working?

Maybe?

[She pauses.]

I don't know...I'd have to ask Max...or Anthy or Maya. I didn't pay attention to any of those things before because I never thought I'd have to know. But would you think about it if you could?

Um...

[God, what is he doing?]

Yeah, I'd think about it. I just, um, I don't think Hermann would go for this, you know? [He pauses.] Not that, uh... We talked about some stuff, and, well, it's like I said. I can't send him home by himself. I've screwed him over enough.

[Mary goes quiet. He's letting her down gently, isn't he? It's not exactly that her face falls, but it does lose a measure of that hope and excitement.]

Oh...yes, I understand.

[She looks at the table, frowning.]

I know not everybody that I want can come with me, or want to...because you earned a new life for yourself. I just don't want to ever have to miss you.

[He gives her a squeeze.]

I know. I'm sorry. I don't want to miss you either... But I will think about it, okay? I mean that. If I can stay in my world and still work with you, then that's a game-changer. The problem is just, um, if I can't.

I just want things to be good all the time...

[She heaves a sad sigh and wraps him up in a hug, all but pulling herself into his lap.]

But if there was never anything that made you sad, then the good things wouldn't mean anything...that's what I bet Anthy would tell me.

[Screw it, he's completing the journey for her. He pulls her into his lap and rests his chin on her head for a moment.]

Yeah, that's true, but it doesn't make the sad things any less sad, you know? But I'm glad I got to know you, even if we don't get to see each other anymore after tomorrow.

[He's hoping that won't be the case, but it's not like they're out of the woods yet.]

We'll ask Anthy or Max or someone about it after the whole judgment thing, okay? There's gotta be something we can finagle.
