week 3 - hermann & caren - monday
[This new store is pretty neat for buying stuff, but boy howdy does it make it tough both to find people and to have conversations out of general earshot. Somehow, since you'd think these things would be mutually exclusive.
Newt and Hermann do eventually track Caren down though. Once they do, Newt (sort of gently) grabs her arm and (also sort of gently) drags her over to the nearest clear aisle, not bothering to wait for Hermann.]
Hey, come here for a minute. We need to talk.
[He says, too ominously. Sorry for the spook, Caren.]

cw: caren
The truth is, she wasn't expecting to be approached here, and she certainly wasn't expecting to be ushered away from the shelves of first aid supplies and into a less familiar area of the store. So Caren does flinch, does tense her upper arm muscles under Newt's hand, does widen her eyes a little bit even as she searches for her normal, flat curiosity.]
Doctor, is there something that you want? Or - perhaps - the two of you? You really need only tell me, and I will come willingly. I don't mind.
no subject
I apologize for Newton, he doesn't think before acting. [Or like at all???] You needn't worry, this is nothing... untoward.
[What does that even mean]
no subject
Nothing about this is weird? It's fine. People are dying. Please everyone take this seriously because Newt sure is.]
Right, uh, so, long story short, Max hooked me up with something neat this week and we know you're not a Reaper. He's got this whole, like, thing with pins and stuff... Whatever, not important, but it's supposed to be secret from the Reapers so don't go telling people about it.
[...]
Point is, we're not Reapers either. Figured you'd want to know we could all trust each other.
no subject
I'm hearing more and more about these pins.
Still, with so many people being sure to clear my partner, it's a relief you gentlemen finally thought of me. Thank for you coming to me with this information. For what it's worth I'd be glad if you definitely aren't. You are both logical men, inappropriate treatment of young girls aside.
no subject
[Never mind. They have more important matters to attend to.]
I realize we have no way to prove this, but I assure you, neither of us are Reapers. Which is why we came to you.
[But backing up a second:]
... What else have you heard about the pins?
no subject
No way to prove it? The proof is that we know about the pins in the first place, dude. That holds plenty of water, especially since she knows about the pins already.
[Whatever, though. Hermann's asked a question Newt very much wants to know the answer to.
Also:]
So, wait, you know for sure that Chuuya's not a Reaper, either? [THIS IS GOOD check out this alliance forming.]
no subject
Yes, I can say that for certain.
I'd elect not to reveal my connections just at this moment, if you don't mind? For various reasons, particularly that I have a partnership to consider. [She's aware it's becoming more obvious that she and Chuuya most often work together, so she acknowledges it in words, too.]
At least two others mentioned receiving a "pin" as some sort of reward or compensation from Max. I'd call both of them my allies.
no subject
[Since that'd be pretty hypocritical, even if he and Newt worked together before... this.]
Have the others mentioned what the function of these pins were?
no subject
Huh. Interesting... Max told us there were others too, but wouldn't say who. Sounded like they were doled out weekly, so my bet is Monika had one and that's how we got the hint at the trial. And then, uh, Max said someone else picked the same pin as me. The one that let me check someone for Reaper status, but, um. They're dead now, apparently. I'm thinking it was Clarke, and she figured out Ranpo was a Reaper, and, uh. Yeah. We all saw how that ended.
[hi caren he Trusts You and will now infodump with abandon.]
no subject
Given the likelihood that he was responsible for his death, I do not think it's a bad theory, though neither am I certain. Do you think she attempted to confront him herself, if you're correct about the pin?
no subject
[So there would be no reason for her to target her, outside of dumb luck.]
According to her page in the book, Clarke was a fighter. She may have thought she could eliminate a Reaper on her own.
no subject
And trying to take the fight to him as opposed to trying to convince everyone to vote for him at a trial probably sounded more, uh, reliable. There was no guarantee he'd be the killer that week, anyway. That, uh, turned out to be a solid play, even if it got her killed... If she'd have waited until the trial, it would've been tough to naturally point at him as a suspect after all that crap Junko pulled.
sorry, tagging during vacation was actually very difficult
Regardless, Clarke is still dead, and if she intended to confront Ranpo, then we can conclude that an intended victim can indeed become a killer.
With only one vote to go around, I expect there will be others trying to kill with the expectation their work will gone undiscovered.
it's fine!!!
[Is he talking to the group, or just himself?]
But yes, I have no doubt that the number of murders will only increase. Now that they believe there are only a limited amount of people who will get to return to life, they're sure to turn on one another in the hopes that the rest of us will focus on the Reapers.
