Well, they said the point of doing this was just entertainment. It's a crappy reason, but I don't think they're just in it for the violence. What's the point of having us try to solve the murders if that was the case? This feels more like some social experiment to me. Throw 40 people on an island, watch them systematically kill each other, and see how that affects the community over time.

That part, I'm not sure. I guess just to add to the interest factor? Most of us are from totally different places, so it could either be another layer of intrigue in watching us cope with those differences, or it could be intended to confuse us. If anything's possible, we have no way of ruling out most theories. A wormhole could've brought us here, or a shared consciousness in a virtual simulation, or just straight up magic...
