CHARACTER
Character Name: Dr. Newton Geiszler (call him Newt!!)
Character Age: 34
Canon: Pacific Rim
Canon Point: post-movie
History: A wiki! but tl;dr: Newt's from Earth circa 2025 and there are big nasty alien monsters attacking the planet, so humanity is fighting back with GIANT ROBOTS!! Newt is a scientist working with the giant robot people to figure out how to defeat the aliens. (Also the aliens are called Kaiju and the robots are called Jaegers.) Newt's canonpoint is immediately following the end of all this, since go figure, by the end of the movie, they manage to stop the invasion.
Personality: Newt Geiszler is pretty much the definition of Extra. He was a child prodigy, has six doctorates, and is, generally speaking, super duper smart... but people may not realize that at first glance. Between his full body tattoos and his casual demeanor, Newt doesn't look or behave like a scientific professional. He prides himself on that, actually. He's gone pretty far out of his way to resist the nerd stereotype. Of course, talk to him for two seconds and his narcissism will (loudly) shine through. Newt is as arrogant as he is intelligent. He's rude and reckless and very obnoxious, but he's also passionate and incredibly optimistic, even in the face of the apocalypse.
Newt is dedicated to helping humanity defeat the Kaiju once and for all, though his motivations aren't entirely selfless. He views himself as a rock star of science and his work in K-Science has been a nonstop ego boost for him. As a result, he's very arrogant. That's great because he's confident in himself and not afraid to make bold decisions, but he can be incredibly reckless, directly disobeying orders from his superiors to do cool dangerous stuff that could get himself killed. Also, he's an absolute nightmare to work with. He's loud and pushy and has little regard for boundaries (personal or otherwise). He and the other K-Scientist, Dr. Gottlieb, share a lab and Gottlieb has reported Newt like a million times for rude behavior ranging from blasting heavy metal to getting Kaiju viscera on Gottlieb's side of the lab. Newt is bad at sharing and also bad at not being the smartest and the best. He's too busy saving the world and being a rock star to worry about stuff like "rules" and "manners."
Lucky for Newt, even though he's a pain in the ass to everyone around him, that doesn't impact his own outlook very much. He's comfortable in his own skin most of the time, especially when he's in his lab. He loves nothing better than to be able to blast music and zone out while he's working on his Kaiju specimens. He also loves having the chance to talk shop with anyone who will listen--he's more than happy to yell excitedly about Kaiju for hours, and he might even listen if the other person has something super interesting to say. In general, Newt tends to be consistent across the board in how he deals with social situations. He's very much himself at all times and doesn't temper that for anyone. That said, how he'll interact with other people is largely dependent on how they respond to him. His default approach is friendly and casual and ready to chat in earnest, but the second the other person condescends to him, he changes his tone. The quickest way to set Newt off is to turn the conversation into a competition. If he feels like the other person isn't taking him seriously or doesn't respect his intellect, he's going to try to Win, which means his new goal is doubling down on his obnoxious arrogance in an attempt to prove that he's the smartest one in the room. Which, according to him, is always true, but he assumes everyone will just know that so he doesn't need to constantly remind them.
On that note, Newt has so much confidence in his intellect that he's willing to risk death in order to prove his theories. Newt's big line in the movie is "fortune favors the brave, dude," and, while epic, it doesn't actually apply to him all that well. He's not all that brave. When Hong Kong is under attack and Otachi is charging toward him, he panics, shoving other people out of the way to make it into the Kaiju shelter. He freezes up when Otachi breaks into the shelter to get him, and again when Otachi's baby is chasing him. That said, he'll throw down and Drift with a Kaiju because he trusts himself. He built the Pons system fromgarbage spare parts and he trusts his mechanical engineering skills to have built a solid machine. He knows Kaiju biology well enough to understand how a Kaiju brain will react to Drifting and he's confident enough in his research to put his life on the line to back it. He's able to be brave and put himself at incredible risk when he feels in control of the situation because of his mind. Despite Pentecost, Herc, and Gottlieb telling Newt that his plan is dangerous and reckless and would likely result in his death, he disobeys orders to do it anyway because he knows it'll be worth it (both for his own ego and for saving Earth, two equally important things, for sure). Drifting with the Kaiju triggers a seizure and obviously was a hugely traumatic experience for him, but when Pentecost arrives after the incident, Newt's first words to him are "I told you it would work." He's a cocky little shit, but that confidence comes in handy sometimes.
All that said, Newt is nothing if not enthusiastic. While the rest of the world views the Kaiju as their sworn enemies, Newt has chosen to embrace them. He's got full body tattoos of various Kaiju that have attacked over the years, and he talks about them like they're biological marvels akin to Godzilla and old school monster movies. This keeps him optimistic in the face of what could be the literal end of the world. Because he's so hype about Kaiju, he's developed a kind of tunnel vision to block out the scary and can instead focus hard on the fascination, which is how he deals with stress in most cases. Get hype, forget the bad shit. And getting hype is never not within reach for Newt; he's incredibly high energy, which everyone around him super loves (no they don't he's very annoying).
Newt is invested in helping others but wants to do that in his own way without regard for rules and societal expectations. He's kind of a renegade and has a sort of... against the grain way of helping that usually doesn't sit well with others. His "Kaiju worshipping" is a good example of this; he's super fascinated with Kaiju and has dedicated his life to studying them, which pisses a lot of people off because the Kaiju are on the verge of destroying the whole planet. His rationale is basically "know thy enemy" and he argues that he needs to understand them in order to stop them. Also, it's a fear-coping thing. Throwing himself headfirst into his fascination makes them less fucking terrifying. And if he can use that fascination to help save the world, well. Win-win! As long as he gets credit for it, of course.
Long story short, Newt is a crazy lil firework and has an unconventional way of looking at the world, but his brains and his optimism make him kind of fun to hang out with... if you can get past the narcissism and the heavy metal.
Inventory: Newt's pretty much just got your typical wallet/phone/keys type stuff on him. In addition to that, he also has a blacklight flashlight and a super secret business card for Hannibal Chau. Super useful!
Abilities: Newt is just a normal guy in terms of magic and stuff like that, but he's suuuper smart. Genius level intellect, 6 doctorates (in what? who knows, thanks travis beacham), spearheaded a bunch of important artificial tissue replication research and Kaiju biology stuff, built his own Pons system (the thing that lets you do the Drifties) out of actual garbage... His specific areas of expertise are biology, mechanical engineering, and music.
Flaws: Newt sucks?? He's obnoxious and rude, he's self-centered and will steamroll everyone else to talk about himself or the Kaiju, and his singing is just the worst. Like, yeah okay, he saved the world, but he'd insist he did that pretty much singlehandedly (if you squint). He genuinely cares about the well-being of humanity and stuff, but that doesn't stop him from shoving people out of the way to get to the Kaiju shelter. He has a lot of good qualities, but he definitely believes he should be congratulated and praised for these good qualities (on repeat, forever, please and thank you).
